Concrete Poetry

Visual Arts At Home Age 5-12
Concrete Poetry at Heide MoMA

When are words not just words? Concrete Poetry focuses on the visual appearance of language, including the typography of words, and playing with the font, shape, size and arrangement of letters. With Concrete Poetry, the way the word looks is as important as the words themselves.

A 5 minute video will introduce the concept of Concrete Art. It features artist Alex Selenitsch who demonstrates examples of concrete poetry from the collection at Heide Museum of Modern Art. This sets you up for the lessons, where you’ll discover the ways visual arts communicates meaning, and then have a go at creating a concrete poem yourself. If you’re looking for something fun to do at home try Art Words – a craft exercise which will guide you through creating a collage which experiments with text and examines the abstract nature of words.

This course is great for teachers of primary school students and for parents wanting to engage their kids in language, literacy and visual arts at home.
