This week (15 – 21 April) marks World Creativity and Innovation Week. Individuals, families, leaders, nations, students and groups from around the globe are invited to use their creativity to consider fresh approaches to difficult questions which will have a positive impact on some of the world’s most challenging issues.
In an education context, thought leaders like Sir Ken Robinson, spruik the value of creativity and innovation to be as important as most STEM subjects in modern society. Governments and the education sector are placing a higher value on creativity as an essential capability for preparing children for the jobs of the future, and teaching children how to use creative thinking is a growing priority of school curriculum. Making this more compelling is that we are seeing the skills taught through creative expression link to all other areas of learning, including literacy and mathematics.
Simon Gipson, CEO of The Song Room – the non-profit organisation behind ARTS:LIVE – believes that teaching children the skill of creativity empowers them to flourish as self-starting, independent learners. However, the feedback The Song Room has received from teachers around Australia is that, although they understand the value of implementing curriculum-aligned arts activities in their classrooms, many feel that they lack the confidence or expertise to do so.
